NEW PALS

Parental involvement is at the cornerstone of systemic reform. Learning begins at home and parents are the first teachers. At Sallye B. Mathis, the NEW PALS Program assists and support parents in their effort to work with their children at home.

NEW PALS is an acronym that stands for - Neighborhood Education Watch: Parents as Advocates and Leaders. The program consists of a series of professional development workshops that provide relevant and up-to-date information and resources on educational advocacy, leadership development, and S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education. Furthermore, NEW PALS provide compensation for participates based upon the hours spent in training.  

Parents participating in the program:

  1. commit to attend six 3-hour workshops,
  2. complete and submit a timesheets following the session that accurately reflects the time present at the workshop,
  3. agree to share the information and activities presented during each workshop with at least 2 other parents/guardians and four children,
  4. share the information or activities learned in a formal or informal setting,
  5. advocate on behalf of their children and all children,
  6. participate in and support the educational activities at the school and,
  7. continue to increase their knowledge of basic science, mathematics, engineering and technology concepts.
